LMS vs TMS: Gut Health for Your Company’s Compliance

Illustration comparing LMS vs TMS with a gut health analogy, showing how a Training Management System keeps company compliance healthy.

Myth Buster: If You Have an LMS, You Also Have a TMS… Nope, You Need Both!

Let’s clear this one up straight away. Just because your company has a Learning Management System (LMS) doesn’t mean you have a Training Management System (TMS).

In fact, most of the time what you’ve got is:

  • An online classroom (that’s your LMS)

  • A stitched-on plugin for record keeping

That little combo can give you a false sense of security when it comes to compliance.

Compliance Health = What You Feed Your System

Think of your LMS like the mouth and taste buds; it devours training content. Important, yes, but once the session is done, it just sits there.

A TMS is the gut.
It’s the system that digests all the information, processes it, and sends the right signals to the rest of your business.

  • Feed it rubbish data? Your compliance gets bloated, sluggish, and unhealthy.

  • Feed it high-quality, structured data? Suddenly, you’ve got energy, clarity, and confidence. You look good to auditors, regulators, and clients, and you feel good because you know exactly where your team stands.

Stuffed With Training, Starved of Compliance

Plugin training modules are like a stomach with no guts, they can hold information for a while, but they can’t digest it or send it where it needs to go. They quickly fill up, give you a false sense of security, and then leave you bloated with unprocessed data.

That’s why plugins fail when it comes to real compliance. They:

  • ❌ Can’t map and track role requirements across multiple positions.

  • ❌ Can’t build a reliable Skills Matrix to show who’s compliant and who isn’t.

  • ❌ Can’t provide a proper Training Needs Analysis (TNA) for planning and budgeting.

All plugins really give you is data constipation. And as we all know, it’s the old story: crap in, crap out.

A proper Training Management System is the gut of your business. It digests training data, tracks expiries and renewals, and feeds accurate, useful insights back into your organisation, keeping your compliance strong, healthy, and audit-ready.

Compliance Health Check: Where’s the Evidence Stuck?

If you’re serious about compliance, you need to ask yourself:

  • How is my training data being tracked, is it flowing into a system or stuck somewhere in SharePoint, spreadsheets, or a filing cabinet?

  • Can I see expiry dates, renewals, and multiple role requirements in one live view?

  • Does my system help me build a reliable Skills Matrix and run a proper Training Needs Analysis (TNA) to plan ahead?

  • Do I have real-time visibility of who is compliant, who’s not, and what action needs to happen next?

Your LMS is great for delivering training, that’s its job. But if your evidence gets stuck in disconnected plugins, SharePoint folders, or siloed systems, it’s like food sitting in the stomach with no gut to digest it. You’re left bloated with records but starving for usable compliance data.

Your TMS is the gut of your business. It digests training completions, processes them into meaningful insights, and feeds the right information back into your organisation. That’s how you stay healthy, energised, and always audit-ready.

Myth busted:

Having an LMS doesn’t mean you have a TMS. Think of it this way, your LMS feeds information, but your TMS is the gut that keeps the whole organisation functioning smoothly.

So, next time someone says, “Don’t worry, our LMS has compliance covered,” you’ll know the truth: that’s like saying a stomach without guts can keep you healthy. It might look full, but nothing useful is happening inside.

A proper Training Management System is what keeps compliance flowing, digesting data, and fuelling the whole business with energy and confidence.
